Abstract Applying Circular Economy strategies is mandatory to face material demand while minimizing the environmental impact. Manufacturing processes are to be thought as means to enable material/component reuse strategies. Influence of friction stir processing conditions on the manufacturing of Al-Mg-Zn-Cu alloy/boron carbide surface composite

Abstract Surface metal matrix composites were synthesized via friction stir processing (FSP) on the surface of aluminium alloy 7075 (AA 7075) sheets by incorporating B4C particles (B4CP). The influence of tool rotational speeds, powder particle sizes, and change in tool travel direction between FSP passes on particle distribution and resulting properties were studied in detail. Change in tool travel direction, decreased tool rotation speed and fine B4C particles enhanced B4CP distribution and wear properties thereof. Wear resistance of composites were doubled on account of the B4CP distribution and resultant several strengthening mechanisms.
Using infrared thermography in order to compare laser and hybrid (laser plus MIG) welding processes

International audience; In order to deepen the understanding of the differences between laser and laser-arc hybrid welding, comparisons were undertaken using thermography. The experiments were carried out for a T assembly of aluminium alloy plates. Modelling, based on the finite element method approach, was realized using IR temperature measurements and seam geometry. For a value of the power supply, depicted as a surface source in the hybrid case, agreement was found between simulated and measured temperatures. The arc power supply efficiency value is similar to the usually used value.

This article studies the limitations of laser machining of metals, and quantifies, through an experimental design method, the influence of operating parameters on productivity and on the quality of the machined surface. Three study materials were used: an aluminium alloy, stainless steel and a titanium alloy. An extensive investigation of the V- and U-die bending processes of AA 5083 aluminium alloy has been performed by means of the finite element method and the experimental tests. The predicted results, in terms of elastic springback and loads, were compared with the experimental ones in similar conditions. At a given punch stroke, the springback ratio K increases with the sheet thickness, and, at a constant sheet thickness, K increases with the punch stroke. Abstract Modification of aluminium alloy substrates microstructure and morphology by depositing new oxide layers on top of the metal surface has been investigated, with the aim of improving adhesion. The effect of treating the metal with boiling water or immersing it in a cerate bath has been studied by means of electron microscopy, contact angle measurements and peeling tests. Abstract Atomic emission spectroelectrochemistry (AESEC) was used to monitor the release of Al from 99.99% aluminum (1199 alloy) and Al, Mg, and Cu from 2024 Al alloy in 30 g/l NaCl electrolyte as a function of pH. The cathodic dissolution of Al was demonstrated and attributed to an increase in the pH at the interface due to the water reduction reaction. The paper contains the fatigue crack growth test results obtained under proportional bending with torsion in AlCu4Mg1 aluminium alloy [1]. Specimens with rectangular cross sections and dimensions: length l = 90 mm, height w = 10 mm and thickness g = 8 mm were tested [2].
